Music and Community

North Shore Unitarians offers many activities and small groups to enrich your life and foster meaningful connections.

Music

Music is a deep source of joy and an integral part of Sunday Services at NSU.  In addition to songs sung by our choir and the entire congregation, we also have performances by guest choirs and musicians, as well as by vocalists and instrumentalists from within our congregation.

Our Music Program is led by Alison Nixon.  Alison is an internationally trained violinist and choral conductor. She has performed with choirs and orchestras throughout the world.

“Welcome Everyone, beginner and experienced alike. We accommodate every skill level, and you’ll have a lot of fun while improving your capabilities. A varied and dynamic music program, such as we have at North Shore Unitarians, can only happen in an environment of joyful creativity and steady commitment.  I am grateful to everyone at NSU who makes this possible.  New participants are always welcome in our Music Program!”

– Alison Nixon, Music Director

Vox Lumina Choir

Our main choir, called Vox Lumina, is a group of approximately 30 dedicated and talented singers who rehearse on Thursdays from 7-9 pm. The repertoire ranges from Bach to contemporary music. The Music Director selects the music both to enhance the services and to enable the choir members to develop their skills. Practices are challenging and fun, with lots of laughter and time for socializing.

The choir performs during most Sunday Services.  They also perform an entire choral service at the beginning of December, a traditional Christmas Eve service, and often a choral concert in the spring.

Music Classes

From time to time, music classes are offered, including singing and guitar lessons.  These are fun, informal classes designed to put you at ease and increase your enjoyment of music.

Small Groups

There are many small group activities at NSU designed to support spiritual growth and connections within our community.

Activities include a Monday Meditation drop-in, a Book Group, Men’s and Women’s Groups, Soul Matters™  spiritual discussion groups, and Environmental Action initiatives.  For more information, check out the quarterly newsletter and Upcoming Events page.

There are additional social opportunities that pop up regularly, such as dinners and potlucks, hikes, concerts, cultural events, gardening days, and teams that form to address a particular interest.  Ideas for new initiatives are always welcome!
