Environmental Action
Our Initiatives
In keeping with our commitment to the future of the planet, the Environmental Action Team is focused on numerous initiatives including:
- Educating the community on how to reduce the impact of climate change, make our homes and communities Fire-Smart™, support pollinator populations, protect marine habitats, and other environmental concerns and solutions.
- Promoting opportunities for action and advocacy on personal, congregational, municipal, provincial, and national levels.
- Coordinating volunteer opportunities, both at North Shore Unitarians (NSU) and in partnership with other environmental groups active in the community.
- Recommending monthly Outreach recipients that are working on environmental justice, and publicizing their activities to the congregation.

Resiliency and Butterfly Gardens
Over the past few years, the Environmental Action Team has undertaken a number of hands-on projects to re-wild areas of the NSU grounds. We have created a Resiliency Garden – planting and cultivating native species that are drought-tolerant, fire-resistant, and attractive to birds and pollinators – and a Butterfly garden. The butterfly garden not only attracts adult butterflies, but is designed to be a wild place where the eggs and larval stages of butterflies can find refuge in plant stalks, inner plant stems, and the soil.
